The Aboriginal Consultation Levy Act, Bill 22, received royal assent on May 27, 2013. Bill 22 was recently introduced into the Alberta Legislature by the Aboriginal Relations Minister in an effort to provide Aboriginal groups in Alberta with the capacity and funding necessary to meaningfully engage in the consultation process (for more details on Bill 22, see Osler’s May 9, 2013, Update). Bill 22 will require proponents of provincially regulated activities to pay a consultation levy into a fund that will be disbursed to Aboriginal groups in Alberta. Although Bill 22 has received royal assent, there has been no indication of when it will be proclaimed into force in Alberta.
