Tunisia:
On June 26th, a gunman killed at least 27 people at the Imperial Marhaba hotel, a popular Tunisian seaside resort in the city of Sousse. The attack coincided with other attacks carried out by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Kuwait and France. Similar to the March ISIL attack at the Bardo Museum in Tunis that killed 22 people, the latest attack targeted Tunisia’s tourism industry, which accounts for roughly 15 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Following the shooting, the entrances and exists to the city were sealed.
On June 26th, as the death toll climbed to 39 people killed and 39 others wounded, ISIL issued a statement officially claiming responsibility for the terrorist attack on the beach resort in Sousse, Tunisia. The claim of responsibility came with a warning that more attacks would follow. Meanwhile, Tunisian authorities said the assailant of the beachfront attack was killed, but it remained unclear whether more than one attacker was involved.
