AGs Pen Letter in Support of EPA Finding on Dangers of Aircraft Fuel Lead Emissions

A group of 12 AGs wrote a comment letter to the EPA in support of the agency’s proposed finding that lead emissions from aircraft fuel cause or contribute to air pollution that may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare (the “Proposed Endangerment Finding”).
In the letter, the AGs provide state-level data for states with some of the highest airport-lead emissions. The letter notes that, if finalized, the EPA’s endangerment determination will require the EPA to promulgate lead emissions standards and regulations for piston-engine planes that are compatible with the findings, and will also require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to establish aircraft fuel standards consistent with EPA’s aircraft lead emissions standards.
The AGs ask the EPA to act swiftly to finalize the Proposed Endangerment Finding and to initiate the emission standards rulemaking for lead in piston-engine planes.
