CBO Projects Medicare Spending Growth – In a report published January 25, 2016, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that expenditures for Medicare, Medicaid, and other major healthcare programs will equal approximately 6.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2016. Additionally, the CBO estimates that Medicare spending per beneficiary is projected to increase at an average annual rate of only 1.6 percent between 2016 and 2026, a significant decrease from averaged real annual growth of 4 percent between 1985 and 2007.
