The City of Milwaukee Common Council has approved the appointment of Ann Wilson to the Fire and Police Commission (FPC). Initially, the council voted not to approve Ms. Wilson, who was appointed by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. After the council rejected her, Mayor Barrett reappointed Ms. Wilson to the FPC. After a long vetting process, the council voted to approve Ms. Wilson. There is currently another vacancy on the FPC, for which Mayor Barrett has yet to nominate a candidate. To read more about the appointment of Ms. Wilson to the FPC, please see the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel here.

The civil rights lawyers of Samster, Konkel & Safran, S.C. congratulate Ms. Wilson on her appointment to the FPC. We remain concerned, however, that the FPC is not fulfilling its legal duty to monitor the conduct of Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) officers. We represent several victims of alleged misconduct by MPD officers, including Derek Williams who died in MPD custody and several victims of allegedly illegal strip searches and body cavity searches. The United States Department of Justice (“DOJ”) is currently considering whether to conduct a complete review of the MPD. We hope that the DOJ conducts its review, so that future incidents of police misconduct can be prevented.
