This document by the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that asbestos causes cancer of the lung, malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum, cancer of the larynx, and certain gastrointestinal cancers. Asbestos is a serious human illness and can also cause asbestosis. These diseases are not usually diagnosed until many years after exposure.
