Attorneys General Continue Fight Against Illegal Robocalling

  • The National Association of Attorneys General sent a letter to the FCC urging it to strengthen protections against foreign-based illegal robocalls targeting American consumers.
  • The letter, signed by a bipartisan group of 51 AGs, asks the FCC to require gateway providers through which foreign calls come into the United States to implement technologies and protocols that can reduce robocalls, including the STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication technology that identifies spoofed calls.
  • The letter also urges the FCC to require that gateway providers take additional measures to reduce foreign robocalls, including blocking calls from likely illegal or fraudulent callers including calls that originate from numbers on a “do not originate” list, blocking calls from foreign telephone companies that do not comply with FCC requirements, and responding to requests from law enforcement authorities to trace back calls within 24 hours, among other things.
  • As previously reported, in 2021, NAAG sent a comment letter to the FCC in support of the FCC’s proposal to require that telephone companies verify their customers’ identities in order to keep legitimate numbers from ending up in the hands of robocallers.
