The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recently announced a voluntary recall of Mother’s Touch/Deluxe Baby Bathers, which are manufactured by Summer Infant, Inc. The problem with the bather is that when it is lifted or carried with an infant in it, the wire frame can, without warning, separate from the side hinge and drop the baby out of the bather, posing a risk of falling and resulting in serious injuries. There have been reports of seven such incidents in the U.S., including five instances of head injuries. Four of the babies suffered skull fractures, including one injury that resulted in bleeding on the brain.
The bathers in question have adjustable side hinges with five rivets in each and a white wire frame with a fabric seat and two to three adjustable seat positions.
Consumers are advised to stop using the bathers immediately and contact the manufacturer for a free repair kit. It is important to note that even after the bather has been repaired it should never be lifted and carried when there is a baby inside.
