Becoming Civilized: Civil Unions in Illinois


Discussion of the new Illinois law establishing Civil Unions. While this new legal status is welcomed by many, there are many unanswered questions about how the law will be implemented and what it will mean for opposite or same sex couples who choose to establish a civil union. This article describes the purpose of the new law, as well as a description of the major provisions of the statute. The article also lays out many of the potential problems which may be experienced by those who register civil unions in light of the impact of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (nicknamed DOMA).
