The Belgian government has issued a ban on mobile phones designed for children by Royal Decree of 30 July 2013. The ban covers selling and advertising mobile phones which are made visually attractive for children, as well as phones indicated by the manufacturer as suited for children under the age of seven.
The ban will take effect six months from now. The ban will be enforced by government employees tasked with ensuring compliance to product standards and by the police under the Belgian Act of 1998 on Product Standards.
The government has indicated that the measure is grounded on safety considerations related to electromagnetic radiation and the precautionary principle.
