As of August 10, 2020, with the signing of Secretary’s Order 3382 by the U.S. Secretary of Interior David Bernhardt, Grand Junction, Colorado is officially the new home to the headquarters for the Bureau of Land Management (“BLM”). Since its inception in 1946, the BLM has been headquartered in Washington, DC; yet more than 99% of the 245 million acres of public lands and programs it manages are located in the Western half of the United States. 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate throughout the nation are additionally managed by the BLM. Secretary Bernhardt comments that not only is this relocation fiscally beneficial for the operations of the BLM; but it also allows the decisionmakers to live and work closer to the lands they are tasked with managing.
