C-20 and C-21 Contractors – New Regulations for Disposal of Mercury Thermostats Take Effect July 1, 2013


January is traditionally the month when new laws and regulations are implemented with July, the closest mid-point CSLB logoin the year, following a distant second.  This July though seems particularly busy with new ADA accessibility disclosures requirements in commercial leases and energy efficiency monitoring and disclosure requirements for commercial properties taking effect in July.

The California Contractors State License Board issued an Industry Bulletin yesterday with another July implementation date. Beginning July 1, 2013, new rules promulgated by the California Department of  Toxic Substance Control take effect which will require C-20 (Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) and C-21 (Building Moving Demolition) contractors to put their license numbers on thermostat containers when disposing of mercury thermostats or, alternatively, to dispose of such thermostats at a collection site operated by the Thermostat Recycling Corporation.  Further information on the regulations can be found here and where to recycle mercury thermostats can be found here.
