California Senate pro Tempore Kevin De Leon announced the new committee chairs and members today. Although chairs of state legislative policy committees do not wield the same control as federal committee chairs, they do control committee analyses and hearing schedule, which can be almost as important as the policy issues.

One large change affecting local government interests is the new chair of the Government and Finance Committee, which hears all bills relating to local government and revenues. The former chair, Sen. Bob Hertzberg, represents an urban district in Los Angeles. The new chair is Sen. Mike McGuire from Healdsburg in Northern California. His district covers a huge area and has a mix of urban, rural, agriculture (especially the wine industry), and open space.

Designated committee chairs and membership will be formally adopted by the Senate Rules Committee when it convenes on Jan. 11, 2017.
