What Caused the CentroMed Data Breach?

The CentroMed data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, CentroMed’s filing with the Attorney General of Texas provides some important information on what led up to the breach. CentroMed also posted a website notice discussing the incident.

According to these sources, on May 1, 2024, CentroMed was alerted to unusual activity within its IT network. In response, CentroMed secured its systems and then launched an investigation.

Through this investigation, CentroMed learned that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s IT network on April 30, 2024, resulting in the unauthorized party being able to access or acquire files containing confidential patient information.

After learning that sensitive patient data was accessible to an unauthorized party, CentroMed reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which patients were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, financial account information, medical records number, health insurance information, and diagnosis & treatment information.

On May 17, 2024, CentroMed sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised. CentroMed estimates that the total number of victims affected by the incident is approximately 400,000.

Note that this is a separate incident from the June 12, 2023, CentroMed data breach affecting 350,000 Texans.
