Citizens Property Insurance Provides Notice of January 2024 Data Breach

On April 17, 2024, Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (“Citizens”) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Montana after discovering that sensitive information stored on the company’s computer network was accessed by an unauthorized party. In this notice, Citizens explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information. Upon completing its investigation, Citizens began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

What Caused the Citizens Property Insurance Data Breach?

The Citizens Property Insurance data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Citizens’ filing with the Attorney General of Montana provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on January 6, 2024, Citizens learned that it was targeted in a “sophisticated cybersecurity incident” that had begun two days prior, on January 4, 2024.

In response, Citizens secured its network and then launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and determine what, if any, consumer data was exposed to unauthorized access as a result.

Ultimately, the Citizens’ investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access the company’s IT network, including files containing confidential consumer information. Through its investigation, Citizens was able to determine that the period of unauthorized access was between January 4, 2024 and January 6, 2024.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Citizens Property Insurance reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. Citizens completed this process on March 28, 2025.

On April 17, 2024, Citizens Property Insurance filed notice of the breach with the Attorney General of Montana’ however, the date the letter was sent was redacted. Regardless, typically, companies send data breach letters around the same time they notify state attorneys general. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
