The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a proposed rule for Stage 2 of its Electronic Health Records (EHR) "meaningful use" program.
The rule lays out the standards and criteria for certification of electronic health record systems.
Under the three-state "meaningful use" program, providers who adopt EHR technology and use it in a meaningful way can qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments.
Stage 2, which is scheduled to be implemented in 2014, includes standards such as the exchange of electronic health data among providers and providing patients with online access to health records.
