The Spanish government announced on Sunday 29 March the closure of all non-essential manufacturing plants in the country. The measure is to take effect at midnight CET on Monday 30 March.

The way that the Spanish government interprets the rule, the new measures would also affect all logistics activities around those plants, including freight transportation to customers across Europe.

The Spanish decree comes only days after Italy adopted similar (albeit slightly milder) measures closing most of the country’s factories, and more European countries are likely to follow in the days and weeks to come. The key factor in this context it to plan for and anticipate whether a business or activity will be included in the list of essential sectors, and whether, for example, freight of already-produced goods will be allowed.
