Welcome to the August edition of the Alston & Bird CPSC Recall Snapshot.

The number of products subject to recalls this year is on pace to dwarf the number of recalled units in recent years. On the heels of the recent IKEA recall involving 29 million units, the CPSC announced the recall of over 5.4 million units of clog removers because the bottles were not child-resistant. The number of units covered by these two recalls alone exceeds the 30.7 million total units that were recalled in 2015. In addition to recalls involving a large number of units, the CPSC recently announced a highly anticipated recall involving hoverboards from 10 firms. In total, 501,000 units were recalled because the hoverboards’ lithium-ion battery packs can overheat and smoke, catch fire, or explode. The CPSC indicated that there have been 99 reports of incidents involving battery packs overheating. Several incidents resulted in burn injuries and property damage.
