Among the dangerous medical products on the market today, those containing progestin drospirenone have been shown in studies to increase health complications. Progestin drospirenone is found in birth control pills such as Ocella, Yasmin and YAZ. Yasmin and YAZ are manufactured by Bayer AG, and Ocella is the generic version of the product manufactured by Barr Laboratories.
Products containing progestin drospirenone have been linked to venous thromboembolism, a condition where blood clots develop within veins in the body. When blood clots dislodge, they can create medical emergencies such as the following:
Deep vein thrombosis – blood clots in deep veins preventing blood flow
Ischemic stroke – disruption of blood flow to part of the brain
Myocardial infarction (heart attack) – interruption of blood supply to part of the heart
Pulmonary embolism – blockage of blood flow to the lungs
Birth control pills are not only used as a method of contraception. Many women use them to regulate their menstrual cycles, balance the hormones causing severe acne, and treat menopause and osteoporosis. Those at higher risk for complications include women over the age of 35, smokers and those with a history of medical issues.
A duty to warn
In April 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered the companies to make the warnings on their products more noticeable. When this directive was handed down to the company, Bayer AG had paid over $140 million to claimants who allegedly have suffered complications from its products. However, this accounts for only one half of the lawsuits pending against the company at that time.
If you live in Southern California and believe you have suffered complications from taking Ocella, Yasmin or YAZ or any other medication, it is important to contact a law firm that understands California law relating to medical products liability and pharmaceutical malpractice. Your rights and your health cannot wait.
