On June 27, 2023, Datasite filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Massachusetts following a third-party data breach. In this notice, Datasite reports that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, which includes their names and Social Security numbers. Consumers who were affected by the Datasite breach should start to receive data breach notification letters explaining more about the incident.

If you received a data breach notification regarding the Datasite privacy incident, it is essential you understand what is at risk and what you can do about it. As we’ve reported in previous posts, third-party data breaches such as this one are becoming increasingly common. However, whether hackers target the company you gave your information to or a third-party vendor, the result is the same: your personal information may be in the hands of cybercriminals looking to steal your identity or commit other frauds against you. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about how to protect yourself from becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft as well as discuss your legal options following the third-party Datasite data security incident.

What Caused the Third-Party Data Breach at Datasite?

The Datasite incident was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Datasite’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, the breach occurred at a third-party vendor used by Datasite, meaning the incident did not involve Datasite’s IT system. Unfortunately, the data breach letter released by Datasite is not yet available on the Massachusetts AG website.

However, several weeks ago, the hackers who carried out the MOVEit data breach listed Datasite as one of their victims. Thus, although it cannot be confirmed, this may be one of the many data breaches involving the MOVEit files transfer software created by Progress Software.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Datasite reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name and Social Security number.

On June 27, 2023, posted notice of the incident on the Massachusetts Attorney General’s website. Additionally, victims affected by the Datasite third-party data breach should be receiving notification letters in the mail explaining more about the incident.
