Capitol BuildingIn November, President Obama nominated Lauren M. McFerran to the National Labor Relations Board and withdrew the nomination of Sharon Block because of GOP objections. McFerran was confirmed on Monday, December 8, 2014, by the Senate in a party line vote after being named in November to replace Block, a contentious nominee and former NLRB member.

Senators voted 54-40 in favor of McFerran, currently chief labor counsel for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, to replace current board member Nancy J. Schiffer, whose term expires on December 16, 2014.

The appointment ensures a five-member panel with the current 3-2 majority status of Democratic members.
