Indiana University’s Manufacturing Policy Initiative (Initiative) has announced a candidate search for the first full-time Director of the Initiative. The Manufacturing Policy Initiative seeks to analyze how public policies affect the health of the U.S. manufacturing sector and identify reforms to improve the health of the sector. The Director will be responsible for building the new initiative, which intends to serve as a source for nonpartisan, state-of-the-art information, analysis, and recommendations on public policy issues affecting U.S. manufacturing such as workforce education, international trade, sustainable manufacturing, innovation and advanced manufacturing, national security, tax policy, regulatory reform, job and earnings growth, and the significance of globalization. The Director will oversee projects, fundraise, coordinate conferences, and serve as external spokesperson for the Initiative. The Director may be able to teach a course on manufacturing and public policy. The Director will lead the Initiative’s advisory board of industry and government professionals and report to the Dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. The position will be based in either Indianapolis or Bloomington, depending on the candidate’s preference.

A successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the manufacturing sector, strong oral and written communication skills, and a graduate-level degree in business, economics, engineering, science, law or public affairs. Preference will be given to candidates with government and industry experience. Further information on the application process can be found on Indiana University’s website.

King & Spalding partner Gil Kaplan founded the Initiative, and King & Spalding has collaborated with Indiana University’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs on earlier events undertaken by the Initiative, hosting a workshop on U.S. Manufacturing and Public Policy in October 2015 and a conference detailing “What the Next President Should Do About U.S. Manufacturing: An Agenda for the First 100 Days” in September 2016.
