Sept. 4, 2014 (Mimesis Law) -- Jami Wintz McKeon, partner and Chair Elect at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, talks with Lee Pacchia about her plans for the firm once her term begins on October 1, 2014. McKeon says that her term will focus heavily on augmenting the firm's industry-specific expertise across core areas, in addition to fostering innovation in the practice of law. McKeon also sees a challenge in "winning the war for talent" in finding and retaining the best lawyers in the world.

Asked why large law firms have struggled to promote significant numbers of African-American lawyers to the partnership level, McKeon highlighted two factors. First, she sees law schools failing to produce a sufficient number of minority graduates prepared to enter large law firms. McKeon also stresses that the market for successful black lawyers is so competitive across professional services and government that BigLaw often finds itself losing vital role models. "The people who are the most sought after are going to have the most options," she says. "It's hard to make a lot of progress when you keep being under that competitive restraint."
