Implementation of the face-to-face encounter requirement prior to the sale of certain DME items was delayed yet again. This is the second delay from the originally planned July 1, 2013 effective date. CMS did not announce a new proposed effective date but did confirm it would be some time in 2014. CMS determined that additional time was needed for DMEPOS suppliers and physicians to establish procedures to be able to comply with this requirement. Implementation of the new requirement had been scheduled to go into effect on October 1, 2013. For more information, refer to our prior Payment Matters article, "DME Face-to-Face Encounter Final Rule Effective October 1, 2013."
