• How much is an eye worth, $17 Million or $45K? For Jimmy Blackwell, a jury decided the loss of his eye was worth $45K. Blackwell sued Richard Mitchell, a Hartwell, South Carolina police officer, after the two men got into a fight in 2009. Mitchell tried to arrest Blackwell for public intoxication when the two began fighting. According to court records, Mitchell was hit in the head, and after pepper spray didn't stop Blackwell who was armed with a screw driver, Mitchell hit him in the head several times with his metal baton....
• $10 million settlement in courthouse worker's mesothelioma wrongful death suit. Nancy Lopez worked in the Jackson County Courthouse in Missouri for 27 years. Unfortunately, the courthouse, like millions of other buildings across the US, contained asbestos. Lopez died in October 2010 from mesothelioma, a deadly, incurable form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos....
• Ex-cop wants big money and his job back on retaliation claims. James Beland was fired from his job as a Lake County Sheriff's sergeant about three years ago. According to the sheriff's department, he was fired for various forms of misconduct, such as insubordination and dishonesty or personal use of county property...
• Take it off the menu! The EEOC recently filed an age discrimination lawsuit against Texas Roadhouse, a popular national restaurant chain. According to the complaint, since at least 2007, Texas Roadhouse has been discriminating against job-applicants for "front of the house" jobs and other positions that deal with the public, like servers, hosts and bartenders. The EEOC claims the restaurant not only hired very few people who were 40 or older for these positions, but it also instructed managers to hire younger job applicants...
