The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency are battling over a new auto emissions rule.[1] The interagency dispute has delayed action by the United States federal government in a conflict that has split automobile manufacturers and pit California and more than a dozen states against the Trump administration.
The battle centers around changes to emissions standards [2] for automobiles established during the Obama administration. The Trump administration wants to severely loosen the standards, while California and a consortium of states want to keep those standards or loosen them only slightly.
Automobile manufacturers rely on a single standard to move forward on design and production plans. The conflict produces regulatory uncertainty, affecting both operations and the bottom line.
