Globeleq, Aurora Power Solutions to build PV projects in Zambia

Independent power producer Globeleq and renewable energy company Sola Group’s Aurora Power Solutions have been awarded two 20 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, in Zambia.

These projects form part of the Get Fit Zambia programme, through which the government aims to procure 200 MW of renewable energy projects within the next three years.

Cost of decarbonising global energy system falls sharply, new report shows

Rapidly falling renewable-energy costs, together with emerging opportunities to electrify other energy end-uses such as transportation and heating, are continuing to reduce the investment premium associated with placing the world on a more climate-friendly path, a new international report highlights.

Published on Tuesday by the International Renewable Energy Agency, the document also calculates that the savings from reduced externalities and avoided subsidies could outweigh the additional energy system costs by a factor of three to seven.

Bushveld subsidiary advances Imaloto project towards financial close

Aim-listed Bushveld Minerals’ coal and energy subsidiary Lemur Holdings has signed a project preparation finance facility agreement with the Development Bank of Southern Africa for US$1 million, which will be used for the development of the Imaloto project, in Madagascar.

The loan will enable Lemur to reach financial close on the project, which is an integrated thermal coal mining and independent power producer project.

South African school goes solar through global funding platform

A Cape Town-based solar micro-leasing firm today announced it will solar power several Western Cape Education Department schools. The first school in the series will be Protea Heights Academy in Cape Town, South Africa.

With immediate savings on their energy bills from the first day the solar project is operational, the schools are not required to pay upfront or ongoing operational costs.

Eaton wins industrial energy efficiency award

Power management company Eaton has won the Hannover Messe Industrial Energy Efficiency Award for its microgrid system installed at its Wadeville headquarters and manufacturing facility in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

The newly-created Industrial Energy Efficiency Award is dedicated to identifying and awarding prizes to outstanding industrial processes and applications based on their energy efficiency, targeting providers as well as users of energy-efficient solutions for production processes.

High-resolution wind resource map for South Africa, now available

The high-resolution wind resource map for South Africa was launched on Wednesday at the final Wind Atlas for South Africa Seminar.

In the keynote address, delivered by Ompi Aphane on behalf of the Department of Energy's Director General, he noted that wind energy remains an integral part of South Africa's renewable energy plan.

It would be difficult to plan thoroughly for the increased uptake of wind energy if one does not have certainty on wind resource availability.

Zimbabwe: telecoms company commissions solar plant

Zimbabwean telecommunications company Econet Wireless has commissioned a 450 KWp solar power plant at its Willowvale industrial complex.

The grid tied solar system will operate under a 25-year Independent Power Producer license, reports The Herald.

The solar plant was implemented by Distributed Power Africa, Econet's solar business in line with the company's commitment towards the adoption of clean and renewable energy in Zimbabwe.

Lemur invites EPCTC contractors to tender for Imaloto project

Aim-listed Bushveld Minerals’ subsidiary Lemur Holdings has put out an invitation for expressions of interest for the engineering, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning (EPCTC) of some parts of the company’s Imaloto power project, in Madagascar.

The company urged interested contractors to provide information demonstrating their relevant experience to undertake the EPCTC of 138 kV, single-circuit transmission lines and substations and associated equipment.
