By turning over the authentication process to an automated, distributed network of computers, blockchains facilitate more efficient exchanges of data without the need for middlemen. It is this immutability, along with the ability of blockchains to serve as a framework for robust, secure, efficient transactions, that has so many people in so many industries excited about its prospects.
