Executive order: Dream Act or nightmare?

more+
less-

My article discusses the ramifications of President Obama's recent Executive Order allowing certain undocumented immigrants, who would have qualified for the Dream Act, which Congress has refused to pass for several years, to obtain temporary work authorization for a period of two years, by placing them into "deferred action". The article analyzes whether this is a good thing or a bad thing for these persons. It concludes that: "the unintended consequences of this executive order may be that hundreds of thousands of undocumented young people will voluntarily turn themselves into ICE, in the hopes of legalizing their status, only to find themselves in the nightmare of deportation."
