If you or a loved one were present on a World Trade Center (WTC) crash or clean-up site after the 2001 terrorist attacks and suffered injury or subsequent illness, you may be eligible for compensation. With the filing deadline of October 3, 2013 rapidly approaching, the time to act on your claim is now.
When you file a WTC injury claim, you must first register and then file your claim. Your claim is not a lawsuit — it is an application for a portion of funds set aside to benefit victims of the WTC disaster who became aware of their injuries after the 2004 closure of the initial WTC Victim Compensation Fund.
You do not need an attorney to file a claim, but speaking with an attorney provides background information, ensures your claim is filed properly and guarantees your claim is not lost in the extensive review process.
Here are some points to keep in mind about filing your claim:
- You can register and file your claim online or by hard copy. Information is provided on the government Victim Compensation Fund website in English, Polish, Spanish and Chinese. A hard copy form and answers to other questions can be obtained by calling the government toll free helpline at 1-855-885-1555.
- During registration you will be asked to identify yourself as a claimant or representative of a claimant, the identification of your attorney if applicable, the nature of the injury or harm suffered and information about your presence at a WTC crash site between September 2001 and May 2002.
- After you register, complete and file the Eligibility Form. Specific information is required about your presence on the site, previous compensation claims and your injury. Once submitted, this form waives your rights to file a legal action for the WTC injury you described.
The WTC Victim Compensation Fund provides support for those injured helping others or those otherwise exposed to the WTC tragedy.
