On April 18, 2024, Frontier Communications (“Frontier”) filed a notice of data breach with the Securities and Exchange Commission after discovering that a third party had gained unauthorized access to portions of its IT environment. In this notice, Frontier explains that the incident resulted in an unauthorized party likely being able to access consumers’ sensitive information. Upon completing its investigation, Frontier will be required to send out data breach notification letters to anyone whose information was affected by the recent data security incident.

Was There a Frontier Communications Data Breach?

The Frontier Communications data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. Thus, it is too soon to say with any certainty whether there was a Frontier Communications data breach. However, Frontier’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission provides some important information on what led up to the breach. Several news sources have also reported on the Frontier cyberattack.

According to these sources, on April 14, 2024, Frontier detected that an unauthorized party was able to access its IT network. In response, Frontier took steps to contain the incident, which included shutting down portions of its network. Frontier also launched an investigation to learn more about the incident and whether any confidential consumer information was leaked as a result.

Frontier’s investigation is ongoing; however, in its SEC filing, Frontier noted that the unauthorized party “gained access to, among other information, personally identifiable information” stored on the Frontier network. Because Frontier is still in the process of investigating the possible breach, the company has not confirmed what data types may have been exposed.

If Frontier Communications confirms that sensitive consumer data was leaked as a result of the cyberattack, it will be required to send out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
