On November 10, 2016, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) released tips and advice for businesses and consumers on ransomware. For businesses, the FTC released Ransomware – A closer look and a companion video, Defend against Ransomware. The FTC’s recommendations for businesses include:

  • Have a tested business continuity plan in place to reduce disruption in the event of an attack;
  • Practice good “cyber hygiene” by identifying devices that can be exposed to malware and implementing technical measures to prevent against intrusions; and
  • Back up all business-critical data.

For consumers, the FTC released How to defend against ransomware. The FTC’s tips for consumers include:

  • Keep anti-virus software up-to-date on all devices (including mobile devices);
  • Back up important files; and
  • In the event of an attack, disconnect the affected device from a network to prevent the ransomware from spreading.

The FTC’s advice is a follow-up to its September 7, workshop on Ransomware and the steps consumers and businesses should take to protect and respond to a ransomware attack.
