The Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice will co-host a second workshop in the series “Examining Health Care Competition” on February 24-25, 2015, in Washington, D.C.

The workshop will look at recent developments related to health care provider organization and payment models, with topics including:  accountable care organizations and health insurance exchanges, alternatives to traditional fee-for-service payment models, trends in provider consolidation, and trends in provider network and benefit design strategies.

The FTC is currently accepting public comments that may be used to prepare for the workshop and in subsequent reports or policy papers.  The Federal Register notice contains a series of questions to prompt comments for each topic.  That notice can be found here.   The FTC will accept comments until April 30, 2015.

The FTC held the first workshop in this series in March, 2014, focusing on the effect of increased price transparency and innovation on competition in the health care services market.  The workshops reinforce the FTC’s continued focus on competition in the health care industry.  The FTC’s investigation into hypothetical antitrust issues in health care coincides with its ongoing, vigorous enforcement of the antitrust laws in this market.
