Have a holly, jolly and Prop. 65 compliant Christmas!

For those of you who are getting ready for the holidays, be aware that the Prop. 65 website is now warning consumers about potential exposures to chemicals in holiday lights. In particular, OEHHA advises that some holiday lights may contain polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating on their wires, cables, and cords that can cause exposure to lead or phthalates. Phthalates are a family of chemicals that are added to some PVC coatings of wires, cables and cords to make them more flexible and durable. In all seriousness, OEHHA also advises that you should wash your hands after putting up lights and make sure that young children do not put them in their mouth.

I have also analyzed recent Prop. 65 notices of violation. Some of the more interesting products being targeted are set forth below. It is obvious that DEHP is the primary chemical that plaintiffs are going after. Don’t forget that food products are also appearing more frequently, with acrylamide at the top of the list.

Have a safe and healthy holiday season!
