Many people who do not have allergies tend to dismiss this health condition as something where a person may get the sniffles if they are exposed to the wrong substance. People who have allergies and who know people who have allergies understand that being exposed to the wrong thing can quickly lead to a very serious if not a dire situation. As such, food companies need to clearly label their products so that consumers understand exactly what the ingredients are in a particular product.

Unfortunately, many people over the years have suffered serious consequences as a result of ingesting foods that contained allergens, unbeknownst to them. Depending on the allergy and the severity of that allergy, people have become extremely ill and some have even died. That’s why food companies that discover that a product or products may contain ingredients that can lead to allergic reactions need to take drastic action if those ingredients are not present on their labels.

Food For Life is a company that has been known by consumers for several years as one that works to provide the public with extremely healthy food choices. They are known for their line of bread and for their cereal choices. Unfortunately, Food For Life has recently announced that it is initiating a recall of several lots of its cereal because the product was mislabeled and it may contain an allergen. That allergen is almond, a food that is healthy but that also can lead to severe allergic reactions.

A total of 15,369 cases of Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Cereal that was shipped between November 20, 2012 and February 11, 2013 have been recalled. The product/UPC/lot numbers affected by the recall include:

  • Ezekiel 4:9 Cereal – Original/073472002550/M3232, M3313, M3512, M3565
  • Ezekiel 4:9 Cereal - Golden Flax/073472002568/M3253, M3309, M3414, M3439, M3523, N0068, N0165
  • Ezekiel 4:9 Cereal - Cinnamon Raisin/073472002574/M3232, M3313, M3328, M3425, M3512, M3527, M3537, N0045, N0132

For people who may have some trouble deciphering these complicated label entries, the company has explained the affected products as follows:

  • Food For Life, Ezekiel 4:9 Boxed Cereal –Original, (Orange Carton)
  • Food For Life, Ezekiel 4:9 Boxed Cereal –Golden Flax, (Blue Carton)
  • Food For Life, Ezekiel 4:9 Boxed Cereal –Cinnamon Raisin, (Purple Carton)

Anyone who has purchased any of these cereals and who may be allergic to almonds is strongly encouraged to avoid consuming them. At this point, there have not been any reports of allergic reactions by consumers, and the hope is that more awareness with regards to this recall will help prevent any of these incidents from occurring. People with almond allergies can experience severe symptoms that include a closing of the throat that can lead to suffocation in some extreme situations.
