In times of tighter public budgets, anything which makes what money there is go further deserves close consideration. One area of public funding that is relatively unscathed for the time being is the European Union (EU) structural funds, most notably the ERDF, as regards its current 2007-2013 programme. However, since it has long been known that the UK for example will surely have less of a share of that funding in the next round (because more will be diverted to statistically much poorer regions in Eastern Europe), thoughts of how to get more from the existing funding have been generating for some time.
