The Region 6 Office of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) issued an October 29th news release announcing it awarded $224,000 to the Arkansas Department of Education (“ADE”).

The purpose of the award is to help identify sources of lead in drinking water in schools or childcare facilities.

The objective of such testing is to reduce childhood lead exposure.

EPA states that the newest award brings total funding to ADE of $664,000.

The funding is supplied by the federal Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (“WIIN”) Act that supplies $26 million in funding for states, territories, and tribes to test for lead in schools and childcare facilities. The WIIN Act addresses and supports a number of United States drinking water infrastructure programs. The three drinking water grant programs include:

  • Section 2104: Small, Underserved, and Disadvantages Communities
  • Section 2105: Reducing Lead in Drinking Water
  • Section 2107: Lead Testing in School and Childcare Program Drinking Water
