The State of Louisiana is facing a severe budget shortfall, and legislators are looking at all avenues to increase revenues. Unfortunately, alcoholic beverages provide an easy target and the state’s excise tax levied on certain alcoholic beverages is in the crosshairs of the Louisiana House. Several representatives filed a bill (H.B. 32) that would more than double the state excise tax on liquor, increasing the tax from $0.61 per liter to $1.45 per liter. The bill would also more than double the excise tax on sparkling wines and still wines. If HB32 is passed, the increase would cause Louisiana to have one of the highest excise taxes for liquor in the southeast.
