Since a landmark court decision in 2000, Canadians’ (legal) access to medical marijuana has been exclusively through a government-run program. However, Canada’s new Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR’s), which came into force on April 1st, 2014, have effectively privatized medical marijuana and created a new industry which is predicted to be worth $1.3 Billion by 2024 (significantly more if recreational use is ultimately legalized). Hundreds of production license applications have been submitted to Health Canada by groups anxious to seize a share of this market, and millions of dollars of venture capital financing have been (and are continuing to be) raised.

Participants in this webinar can expect to learn information critical to advising clients who may be interested in participating or investing in a medical marijuana operation in Canada, including:

• how medical marijuana is accessed under the MMPR’s, and how that differs from the previous Medical Marijuana Access Regulations;

• the process of applying to become a licensed producer of medical marijuana in Canada;

• some of the risks and challenges facing licensed producers; and

• the current legal challenges to the MMPR’s, including a recently granted interlocutory injunction.
