Currently the City of Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission (“FPC”) hires the Chief of the Milwaukee Police Department (“MPD”). Recently, several high-profile incidents, such as the death of Derek Williams in MPD custody and allegations of illegal searches by MPD officers, have brought increased scrutiny to both the FPC and the MPD. Now, Milwaukee Common Council President Willie Hines is proposing a change in the MPD Chief hiring process, where the Mayor of Milwaukee would appoint a candidate for Chief, and the Common Council would have to approve the appointment. President Hines believes the change would improve accountability within the MPD. Read more about the proposed change on the Fox 6 Milwaukee website here.

The civil rights lawyers of Samster, Konkel & Safran, S.C. agree that there needs to be more accountability within the MPD. We represent the three young children of Derek Williams and several victims of the allegedly illegal searches conducted by MPD officers. We will do our best to hold the MPD officers involved in these
incidents accountable.
