  • Minnesota AG Keith Ellison’s office has released a report on emerging technology and its effect on youth well-being, which was commissioned by the Minnesota legislature in 2023.
  • The report covers the current state of social media regulation, privacy and data protection laws, and A.I. specific litigation. It also catalogs what the AG identifies to be negative effects of technology impacting youth, including bullying and harassment; exposure to unwanted disturbing, graphic, and sexual content; and manipulation and fraud by strangers.
  • Finally, the report includes a series of policy recommendations based on its findings. These recommendations include banning “dark patterns” within platform design, mandating consumer-friendly device-based defaults, and implementing usage limits and technology educational programs in schools.
  • Cozen O’Connor attorney Jerry Kilgore recently authored an op-ed encouraging Congress to take action to advance uniform, federal standards for app ratings and parental approval for apps download by children.
