Multistate AG Coalition Settles with CVS and Walgreens for $10.7 Billion over Opioid Allegations

A group of 18 AGs reached agreements with CVS Health Corporation and CVS Pharmacy, Inc., and separately with Walgreens Co., to resolve allegations regarding the companies’ roles in contributing to the nationwide opioid crisis. The states have until the end of 2022 to formally join the agreements, which then will go to local governments for sign on during the first quarter of 2023.
Under the terms of the agreements, CVS will pay $5 billion and Walgreens will pay $5.7 billion. The companies will also be required to monitor and report suspicious activity related to opioid prescriptions.
The agreements resolve allegations that the pharmacy chains improperly dispensed opioid medications. Walmart recently reached a $3.1 billion settlement agreement regarding similar allegations, as we reported here.
