Navigating the Perfect Storm: Recruiting, Traing and Retaing Lawyers in the Coming Decade (Ark Press, 2010)

The Great Recession has revolutionized the practice of law. It has had a profound impact on recruiting - at every level, from recent graduates to partners. Clients' refusal to pay for time billed by recent graduates requires both a dramatic reassessment of lawyer training and legal education in this country. The entire nature of the relationship between counsel and client has changed, from the method by which lawyers are reatined through the billing and payment process. New concepts, such as alternative fee arrangements and legal project management are taking hold and are here with us to stay. My book deals with each of these issues and more, including training lawyers to efficiently deliver a quality work product, moving from rewarding lawyers for maximizing the number of hours blled to rewarding for efficiency, maintenace of client relationships, marketing in the new era, the RFP processs, lateral partner recruitment, establsihing branch offices, acquiring practice groups, merger integration, new CLE models, lawyer retention and atrition, new opportunities resulting from these tumultuous times and management challenges law firms now confront. As a number of my reviewers have said, this book is required reading for every lawyer, most especially those in manangement roles, every law firm administrator, every law school administrator and law school professor and anyone contemplating a career at the law. Those yong men and women actually attending law school and thse planning on attending law school will find this book the only complete disclosure statement they will ever read - and must read - before spending three years and spending $200,000 on a legal education, particularly as the number of lawyers employed in this country are at their lowest levels since 1991.
