On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order requiring New York employers to provide certain employees with masks or other face coverings, at the employer’s expense. The order applies only to those businesses that are currently open in the State of New York, as Governor Cuomo previously ordered those businesses deemed “non-essential” to remain closed through April 29. It requires that those businesses that remain open provide face masks or shields to all employees who interact with customers or any members of the general public. The order does not specify the type of face covering required, but language on the Governor’s website states that cloth masks are permitted.

The order will go into effect at 8 p.m. on April 15 and remain in place until May 12, subject to further extension.
