The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued proposed privacy controls for federal agencies and government contractors, with four main objectives in mind:

1. provide a structured set of privacy control;

2. establish a link between privacy and security controls;

3. demonstrate applicability of NIST Risk Management Framework; and

4. promote closer cooperation between privacy and security professionals;

Review of the proposals within NIST 800-53 Appendix J will assist private and public entities in assessing the current direction of federal government policy in regard to privacy and will also aid counsel in preparing entities for further changes in this field.
