State Supreme Court Orders Legislature to Redraw Maps

In a 4-3 decision on Friday, the State Supreme Court ruled the recently drawn Congressional and State legislative maps unconstitutional. The NC General Assembly must redraw and submit new maps to a three-judge panel by February 18. Legislators must also submit the data used to draw the maps and the methods used to calculate partisan fairness. Plaintiffs in the case, which include the League of Conservation Voters’ North Carolina, may also submit maps. The trial court will approve or adopt compliant maps by noon on February 23. The ruling did not make any changes to the primary election date which is currently scheduled for May 17. The full State Supreme Court ruling can be found here.
