NURSING HOME IGNORES PRIAPISM FOR FOUR DAYS RESULTING IN PERMANENT INJURY, RESIDENT EVENTUALLY DIES FROM NEGLECT

December 19, 2012, Chicago, IL: Chicago personal injury attorneys, Alexander Loftus of Fichera & Miller and Michael Keating of Keating Law Offices filed a lawsuit today against South Point Nursing Home in the Circuit Court of Cook County.

The lawsuit filed by the family of Franklin D. Wilson alleges that the owners of South Point Nursing Home failed to provide sufficient trained staff and allocate resources to provide appropriate care to meet the needs of patients. The complaint alleges that as a result of this failure to provide the most basic level of care Mr. Wilson sustained injuries including, but not limited to, pressure ulcers, penile vascular implant surgery, dehydration, malnutrition, multiple falls, and sepsis.

On, April 21, 2011 while being treated at Little Company of Mary Hospital for one of his many falls at South Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center hospital staff noticed Franklin Wilson had a persistent erection. When pressed for answers by Mr. Wilson’s treating doctors the nursing home staff reported Mr. Wilson had been suffering from untreated priapism for over four days. Despite knowing he was suffering from priapism the nursing home staff did nothing to treat his condition. As a result of this neglect, Mr. Wilson required life altering surgery on his genitals to resolve the priapism which would not have been necessary had the nursing home staff reported the incident.

The lawsuit seeks damages sufficient to compensate the Wilson family for the loss of their father and deter other Chicago area nursing homes from future neglect of patients. The Wilson family does not want anyone else to endure the pain and humiliation their father endured.
