As previously reported on this website here, the Milwaukee District Attorney has filed criminal charges against four Milwaukee Police Department ("MPD") officers who are accused of conducting illegal strip searches and illegal body cavity searches. The four accused MPD officers are Michael Vagnini, Jacob Knight, Jeffrey Dollhopf and Brian Kozelek. At a hearing on Thursday, November 15, 2012, all four MPD officers pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges. The trial for the officers is scheduled to begin in April 2013.
The civil rights attorneys of Samster, Konkel & Safran, S.C. represent several victims of the illegal searches. While we hope that the criminal trial holds the four MPD officers accountable, we also believe that there may be a pattern of police misconduct, including illegal searches, within the MPD. We therefore hope that the United States Department of Justice decides to conduct a complete review of the MPD, so that future police misconduct can be prevented.
