These are the slides from a recent webinar by Pepper Hamilton and Travers Smith.
The demise of the EU-US safe harbor arrangement has been bad news for many businesses in the U.S. and the UK. A new "EU-U.S. Privacy Shield" deal in principle has just been announced as the replacement to the safe harbor but it is already causing much controversy, is currently short on detail and is still subject to a number of hurdles before it can become effective. The much anticipated release of the final text of the onerous new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) due in the coming months only adds to the uncertainty. There is a lot to worry about in the world of data protection and cross border transfer of personal data.
This joint webinar offered unique insights by leading UK and U.S. law firms, Travers Smith and Pepper Hamilton. Topics covered included:
•report on the new "EU-U.S. Privacy Shield", highlight possible new compliance burdens and examine the alternative mechanisms being used to allow export of personal data from the UK / Europe to the United States, and
•learn about the issues which both UK and U.S. businesses will have to plan for in order to comply with the upcoming GDPR: it comes into effect in 2018 but many issues may need substantial lead times.
