Preparing for Depositions in Finland

Taking depositions in Finland is a fairly simple process.  There is no visa requirement for U.S. citizens, and no restrictions as far as where in Finland you can depose a witness (see U.S. State Department – Finland).  Once the dates have been finalized for your depositions, you will then decide if you will attend them in person or via videoconference.

Another important logistical consideration when planning depositions abroad is the printing of exhibits.

If you will be attending your Finnish depositions in person, two OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAvital elements to prepare for are climate and Finnish social norms.

The winter season in Finland varies, depending how far north you go.  Northern Finland sees snow from November to May, and central Finland gets snow from December through March, sometimes into April.  For two months in the winter, the northernmost part of Finland gets no full sunlight, only a few hours of twilight, then darkness.  Winter temperatures range from -30°C (-22°F) to 0°C (32°F).

Spring barely exists in Finland.  Snow is still on the ground when crocuses begin popping up around late April, and by May Finland is blooming all over with fresh grass and flowers.  Finns take advantage of the warmer temperatures to get out and hike.  Temperatures are still chilly, ranging from 0°C to (32°F) 10°C (50°F).

Summers in Finland are known for long days, with the sun still shining at 10 pm.  In the north, the sun never sets.  Finnish summers know no nights, just twilight.  Festivals are very popular in Finland, in particular music festivals of various genres.  Sailing and swimming are other favorite summer activities.  Summer temperatures range from 15°C (59°F) to 25°C (81°F).

Autumn brings a cornucopia of colors, as the leaves change and Finns go hiking in the scenic forests, or go berry or mushroom picking in the crisper temperatures.  Unfortunately, fall is a short season in Finland, as winter begins early in this country (and ends late), particularly in the north.  Fall temperatures range from 5°C (41°F) to 15°C (59°F).

English is widely spoken in Finland, and you will find Finns very hospitable, if quiet.  Longer pauses in conversation are normal and should not be interrupted, as Finns view silence as part of the conversation.  Topics to avoid include comparisons to Sweden or Russia, as Finns have a strong national identity and do not take kindly to such comparisons.

If your depositions are in Helsinki, you are in the world’s coffee capital, so duck into one of her many cafes to enjoy a cup.  Tipping is not necessary in Finland, but not objectionable.

Finland has much to offer as a deposition destination.  For more information, visit U.S. State Department – Finland Travel or U.S. Embassy – Finland.
